The Many Types of Coffee Pots

The definition of a coffee pot is a vessel used to brew or make coffee. These come in many different styles and offer various ways to produce the desired brew.

Drip Maker

Gourmet Food

The most widely used coffee pot today is the drip maker. These work by placing coffee in a filter and placing it inside of the container which holds water. The water is heated and pumped through the coffee where it then drips into the pot below. Water temperature is controlled internally to maintain a temperature just below boiling. Boiling coffee tends to produce a bitter taste which is undesirable to most people. These drip pots come with many features which include clocks, alarms, and delayed timers. Most offer the benefit of setting the timer to go off about the time you usually get up in the morning. It is very pleasing to wake up to the smell of freshly brewed coffee.

Percolator

Another popular type coffee pot is the percolator. Percolators work by pumping water into the container holding the coffee until the desired result is achieved. The coffee stays in the same container in which it is brewed. A basket keeps the dry coffee from being deposited into the coffee container. Percolators were popular in the 1970s and 80s before the drip maker became the coffee maker of choice. Percolators are still used today to produce large quantities of coffee since the drip maker usually has a limit of twelve cups.

Vacuum

Many people still enjoy the tradition of vacuum coffee pots because the pots offer interesting shapes and designs. These pots work on the theory that steam creates a vacuum which draws the water and steam through the coffee grounds without distributing the grounds throughout the coffee. The process is similar to the percolator with the exception of the repeated pumping action required of the percolator.

Coffee Pot Safety

There were times when coffee pots were made with long cords which would reach from a good distance across the room. This became a hazard to children who were playing on the floor. Many young children were burned when they pulled the pot off in the floor and the coffee splashed on them. Today coffee pots usually come with a short cord that will only allow you to use it close to an electrical outlet. It is important that you not use an extension cord since this could allow small children to get hurt.

It is also important that your home coffee pot be equipped with a timer that will automatically shut off after a certain period of time, usually two hours. This could prevent a fire if you forget to turn the pot off before you leave the house. This feature can give you peace of mind when you remember half way through your day that you left the coffee pot on.

What Exactly Is Alternative Dispute Resolution?

Legal Dictionary

ADR – Function: abbreviation; alternative dispute resolution

Gourmet Food

Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary of Law, © 1996 Merriam-Webster, Inc.

It used to be that things were fairly simple. If you had a legal dispute, you went to a local attorney to find out your rights. You and your attorney reviewed the law and the facts and you took your best shot in court. The idea was that the proper use of the evidence, a good attorney and a court of law would sort it out and justice would be done.

Then the court dockets became clogged. Good attorneys became too costly for the average person. Your day in court became a half day squeezed in between nine other cases on the docket. Your attorney tells you to try mediation or arbitration to save on costs; or the court orders you to mediation before you can appear before the judge. Worse, you go before a judge for the fourth time because your ex didn’t bring the kids back on time and the judge orders you to see a parenting coordinator. A parenting what?

This article discusses some of the popular alternative dispute solutions being used by attorneys, the courts, businesses and private individuals. There is no “right” model for everyone. Some solutions are permanent, some are flexible, some you need an attorney and many you can do yourself.

ARBITRATION

Arbitration is not a new concept and it is not just for sports teams. It has been used by state agencies for many years with varying degrees of success. Corporations began turning to it more than 100 years ago, and merchants have been using it all over the world for thousands of years. It is gaining popularity today because it reduces costs, is faster and less formal than court proceedings, it reduces the need for litigation attorneys, and you get a say in who hears your case. Some arbitration consist of a panel of three arbitrators and others have only one. Often, you can choose from a list of arbitrators or a recommendation by an attorney or associate.

Probably the most common place you find arbitration in the private sector in Florida is condo associations and HOAs, labor, or contract disputes. Arbitration can be binding or non-binding and many contracts have arbitration clauses that must be satisfied before traditional litigation can occur.

Arbitration is the most formal of the modern ADR methods for resolving disputes. For example, if you decide to have one arbitrator, that individual will hold a hearing just as if you went to a regular court. However, the rules in arbitration are very different than those you may have seen in a courtroom, while still providing you with a formal hearing process. Attorneys are welcome, but not required. However, because arbitration can be binding, and your appeal options may be limited, attorneys are strongly recommended.

There are several benefits to arbitrating your dispute. First, as previously mentioned, you have a say in who hears your case rather than being randomly assigned by a judge. Second, arbitration shortens the time frame, for your case. It allows you to schedule your case rather than having to work around the court’s calendar. Third, the procedures, formalities, rules of evidence and the conduct of the hearing are all designed to be more relaxed than a court room. Next, when you schedule your witnesses you don’t have to repeatedly inconvenience them if court is running behind. If your witness takes a day off, a good arbitrator will try to schedule the time to make sure they get into the hearing. Another benefit is getting a decision quickly. Florida law requires that any court-referred arbitration render a decision within 10 days after the hearing unless there are special circumstances.

PARENTING COORDINATION

Next in formality is parenting coordination. This is a specialized process that is fairly new to Florida courts and, I hope a great idea for other jurisdictions. Everyone has heard of the family court cases that keep going back to court over and over again. Parenting coordinators are specially trained individuals that are assigned to tough cases to help parents and the courts create working solutions to ongoing parenting issues. Right now, almost all parenting coordination in Florida is done by court order and the parties have to be able to pay for the services. Attorneys are not permitted in the actual session, but the parties continue to have access to their attorney.

There are several benefits to parenting coordination that are not available to most family court cases. First, the Parenting Coordinator (“PC”) gets to know you and your unique family situation and issues over a longer period of time. There is no magic formula to make people get along better after a break up or divorce, but the PC can use many forms of dispute resolution to assist struggling families to comply with court orders and try to keep the process focused on the best interest of the children, as determined by the court.

It is not an easy process, but it has proven very effective since the start of the program just a few years ago. It uses traditional methods, court support, mediation, collaborative efforts, facilitation, and other resources to try to keep the family on track.

MEDIATION

Mediation is being used in the vast majority of cases today because it is so effective and you get to help create the agreement rather than being ordered by a judge to comply with a decision. Mediators work with you to help you find solutions to your issues on your terms and according to your schedule. The concept is simple: no judge will ever know you or your situation better than you know it. Having a trained mediator helps you negotiate what you believe is the right solution for you, for your family, for your situation, for your outcomes. Mediation can also save thousands of dollars in costly litigation and months or years of time completing your case. Mediation is not the same as compromise. It is a unique set of solutions designed by you, agreed to by you, in cooperation with your opponent without having to drag each other through lengthy litigation, hard feelings and “traditional” solutions that just don’t work for your life. It can be court ordered, or it can be done privately either before or after filing a lawsuit, and can be done with or without an attorney. For example, many people today are using “compassionate” divorce mediation techniques that work with couples contemplating divorce without the hard feelings and costs of traditional divorce. A growing trend is couples seeking mediators before seeking attorneys, although the “jury is still out” about whether this will work in the long run. “Collaborative divorces” are also increasing in frequency, where the attorneys act as mediator and attorney, but only time will tell if this model will hold up to ethical and conflict issues.

FACILITATION

Finally, there is facilitation. This is often used in corporate settings or where several people need to work together to brainstorm ideas, solutions or projects. A good model for facilitation is a moderated brainstorming session. These programs are exciting, exhilarating, creative and have lasting effects on all participants. They open the door to tremendous growth, and facilitation is an outstanding morale booster for companies seeking to improve communications and productivity across departments or platforms. In a family setting it can be used to incorporate extended families and caregivers, and to promote cooperation and joint problem solving,

I hope this helps you better understand some of the alternative dispute solutions available to you. If you would like more information, you can contact Lyndy at her blog at Collaborative Solutions, P.A.

How to Prepare a Perfect Romantic Picnic

Preparing for a romantic picnic can be both an exciting and fulfilling experience. Yes, the preparation itself can be an exciting experience especially if you intend to make it a surprise romantic picnic. Of course, we all know that making a person feel special is always a happy and fulfilling experience.

The trick to planning a romantic picnic is by imagining a romantic setting. What elements are found in that setting? The food, the atmosphere or ambiance, basically all the details that can bring out a romantic mood.

Gourmet Food

The Ambience

The weather plays an important role in bringing a romantic ambience, and so is the time of day. There are certain accessories and adornments though that could also bring a romantic ambience. Candles and flowers are the best examples for this. The scenery and the company of each other, of course, completes a perfect romantic atmosphere.

The Food

Regardless of whether it’s a romantic picnic or not, what is a picnic without food! There are a lot of picnic menus to prepare but for the particular atmosphere that you would like to achieve, there are certain foods that could just spice up your romantic picnic.

Here are some ideas:

1.A “romantic platter” of your favorite sausages, cheese and olives combined with your favorite wine. Sausages could be anything from the all-time favorite Italian sausage, Hungarian, Schublig or Bratwurst. Your choice of cheese, on the other hand, could be brie, camembert, Swiss, goat, or cheddar. As for wine, gone are the days when you have to pair red wine with meat and white wine with fish. It’s now all about your taste. You can go for a White Chardonnay or a White Briolo or even champagne. Remember, this is a romantic picnic for you and your partner.

2.For those who love a romantic seafood treat, you can also go for shrimp cocktails, oysters, and caviar.

3.If you think you won’t have the time to prepare a romantic setup, but would still like to achieve a romantic food experience, you can also go for ready to eat meats like pastrami, roast beef, turkey or any smoked products. You can also couple it with bread like baguette or your favorite French bread.

4.For desserts, you can either have fruits or chocolate. You’ll definitely won’t go wrong with these two. Fruits can be anything from strawberries, to cherries, to grapes, to kiwi slices, to apple slices. You can prepare them with your favorite whipped cream or just serve them in style with a martini glass or a small basket.

Chocolates could be your favorite dark chocolate, Hershey’s kisses, or even the popular peanut butter cups. If you want to make your dessert more interesting, you can also go for gourmet chocolates – this would definitely go well if you want to make an all-gourmet romantic picnic.

The Basket

Of course! Your picnic basket is your ever-reliable “accomplice” to help you set up your romantic picnic plan. What is important is that you pick the right basket that will allow you to store all your romantic preparation. It should have compartments not only for food but also for your other must-haves like silverware, knife and wine glasses.

Oh, by the way, don’t forget the blanket.

How To Make Cappuccino In 3 Simple Steps!

Consider this the basic in the how to make cappuccino series. This article would highlight the steps to make cappuccino like the baristas you see in Starbucks and most coffee shops…

Before moving on to the 3 simple steps to make the cappuccino, do you know what is cappuccino? The key to understanding this, would be invaluable to learn how to make it. Knowing the components of a cappuccino enables you to visualize the procedures later.

Gourmet Food

Cappuccino is actually an espresso filled with 2 types of heated milk, i.e the steamed milk and the frothed milk. And, it is the frothed milk that gives cappuccino that classic look and it is also the “so difficult ” frothing that lead world coffee bodies in using the froth to evaluate the skills of baristas.

The proportion of cappuccino is 1/3 espresso, 1/3 heated milk and 1/3 frothed milk. We would not touch on espresso in this article, as it warrants one entire article on how to get a good espresso, here we would highlight the other 2 components, the steamed and frothed milk, to better your learning in how to make cappuccino.

You would get steamed milk when the heat source (usually the steam wand) is injected into the milk, slightly below boiling point. As the injection of hot air is controlled to a minimal, there would not be any change in the milk volume except for a small amount of micro bubbles or froth.

To get more bubbles, i.e. to get frothed milk, place the steam wand at the surface of the milk, and this would creates more of the micro bubbles, remove the steam wand, when the froth has the look and feel of whipped cream.

Now, let’s learn how to make cappuccino in 3 simple steps:

i. when using an espresso machine, while waiting for the espresso to brew, steam and froth the milk in a frothing pitcher. Once done, set it aside for approximately 30 seconds.

This is to allow the milk densities to separate. To speed up the process, you can try what Starbucks or most coffee shops’ baristas are doing -by knocking the frothing pitcher on the table, this would separate the steam from the froth milk.

ii. Then, take a large spoon to keep the milk foam as you pour out the steam milk. As you pour the steam milk into a mug, do it slowly to prevent breaking the froth, and stop when you reaches 1/3 of the mug.

With the 1/3 steam milk done, spooned up the froth milk and put it on top of the steamed milk, this foamed milk should take up another 1/3 of the mug.

iii. For the last 1/3 of the mug, pour in the espresso down the middle of this foamy sculpture. And there you have it, a foamy cappuccino!

Not that complicated right? No need to ask how to make cappuccino like that Starbucks baristas anymore right? You can do it with 3 simple steps!:)

Men are From Mars Women are From Venus

Relationship Enrichment Seminar

Dr. John Gray author of the best seller “Men are from Mars, women are from Venus”

Dr. Gray mentioned as a preamble to his talk that when his book ‘Men are from Mars, Women from Venus’ had come out he was questioned whether one can make generalizations in terms of the behaviour of men and women. The only response he gave was whether they resonated with what was written in the book and 100% of the time they replied ‘Yes’.

Gourmet Food

1. The differences between Men and Women are universal. Women all over the world complain that “He doesn’t understand”. “He doesn’t listen”. “Only time he touches me is when he wants sex”. And men all over the world complain that “She doesn’t want to have enough of sex.” (Unless the woman is around 37 years. At this magical age women want more of sex than ever before.)

2. Women like affection from men much more than sex. They want to be hugged. John learnt to hug his wife.

3. Men like to be logical. Women like to share and talk even if there is no point in their sharing and talking. Men need to have an objective. They need to see the point in doing something. They can’t share for the sake of sharing.

4. Men tend to do one thing at a time. Women do many things at a time. Men have a tunnel vision. 95% of their attention is focused on just one thing and 5% on checking of the environment. Women are just the opposite. They are continuously taking in everything that there is in the environment whether it is useful or not.

5. John narrated the incident of his wife asking him to get some milk while coming home from work. He forgets. She considerately puts it down to his thinking of work. She asks him again. Again he forgets. She takes it personally. It’s not that the milk was forgotten but that she was forgotten. Women behave in this manner.

6. Men have their own caves on which the sign states “Please do not disturb.” Men like to retreat into their own world where they feel they are in control. Women also have caves but the sign on their caves is “I need to talk”. When a man asks a woman what’s wrong and she says “Nothing” it really means “Nothing, unless you care to listen and give me an opportunity to talk.”

7. 90% of women go into therapy because they want to be listened to. They want to be asked questions. They want to feel special. Men hate to be questioned. If men want to talk they’ll talk. If they don’t want to talk they won’t. When a man is locked in his cave, the woman thinks that something is wrong with him and goes in and asks questions. This is a wrong move for the woman to make. Men hate to be interrogated.

8. When a woman touches a man she may want to be cuddled. But for a man anywhere he is touched leads to Rome and he thinks therefore that it has to lead to sex.

9. Men want to forget the problems of the day. Women want to remember. A man will say “Forget it, it’s no big deal.” For a woman she will not rest till the problem is talked about. Her response to the man, who wants to just forget about it and not make a big deal out of it, will be “How can you be so insensitive.”

10. Men should never tell a woman how she should feel. In fact if she is unhappy, the man needs to be unhappy with her for a while instead of offering advice.

11. If the man is at a loss for saying anything when the woman is feeling bad then instead of offering advice he could build her up a bit by saying “I know how much you work during the day to make the kids and myself feel happy. It must be very exhausting.” Her unconscious response would be “He understands.” The woman craves for understanding.

12. Women make noises to get attention. Men make noises to signal “Please leave me alone.”

13. To cope with stress, sometimes, women while speaking tend to speak in long sentences and then pause. Men think that the pause is a signal for saying something. Wrong. For the woman the pause is just a semi-colon. Men need to restrain themselves in giving advice.

14. When a woman is upset and a man tries to give a solution 99% of the time her response will be “Yes….but”. When she is relaxed then give the solution. After she has been given the opportunity to talk about it.

15. If a man tries to walk in a woman’s shoes, she will be more willing to understand his point of view. Men tend to expect women to agree with their point of view because they feel it is obviously the best point of view.

16. Men are efficiency oriented. Must do it the easiest and fastest way. Women on the other hand feel that taking the shortest path between 2 points is boring. Women like variation. This is especially true in the bedroom. Men go by the same formula every time while women want variation. Men like uniforms and the same uniform. Men look good in a tuxedo or a suit and that’s it. Every time the same tuxedo or suit. Women like to change their dress; sometimes thrice or even more times in a day.

17. When John’s book ‘Men are from Mars, Women from Venus’ was on the bestseller list for 6 years in a row, John realized how narrowly focused in life he had become. He only gloated about his book being no. 1 on the bestseller list. John was missing the little things of life where his wife and children were concerned. Women are able to see the little things in life and be happy.

18. The more narrow the focus of a man the more stressed he is bound to get. He can’t notice anything else other than what he is focusing on at that moment. Women deal with lots of problems at the same time and the way they cope is to talk about them.

19. Men use their brain sequentially viz. one part at a time. Where women are concerned it is usually the whole brain at once.

20. Women lower stress through talking and sharing. The collectiveness and togetherness which they share is part of their feminity. Men lower their stress by being alone. Women’s attitude is that if we can’t do anything about it then let’s talk about it and suffer together. Men’s focus is on solving the problem. And if they can’t solve the problem then they make the problem disappear by forgetting about it.

21. Men always want to be right.

22. Women, unknowingly sabotage their success. They put themselves down because they want support. Women bond by putting themselves down. For example if one is late for a particular function in the office, the woman will say what an imbecile she is by not catching the right train or missing the connection because of some stupid mistake she made and so on. And other women who are also late will do the same.

23. Or if a woman is having a problem with the computer, she will call the so called expert from the computer department and tell him that she doesn’t know anything about computers and that she is very happy that he has come to her rescue and thereby push the guy way up there. But when he suggests a solution which she tends to disagree with, she doesn’t know how to tell him because if she does it, it makes him come crashing down and he reacts by saying that she has wasted his time. In this case one needs to resort to face saving devices like ‘whatever you have suggested will I am sure help me to figure it out (even if you see no utility in the suggestion).

24. As women more and more enter into the workplace their need to being listened to and understood is not being met. The workplace is efficiency oriented. They are becoming more and more isolated. They have to raise their children alone. Unseen and unheard. And this is causing them to go more and more into depression. The man focusses on work no matter what the problems are that are being experienced at home.

25. Man is efficiency oriented. He needs to feel needed. He needs problems to be solved. If there are no job opportunities or there is no effort called for to do something then the man feels depressed.

26. When women feel nurtured they feel happy. They are happy with the small things of life. Man likes to measure himself against the goal he has set for himself. Men behave like squirrels. They focus on one thing, dash towards it and once they reach there then they turn their focus on another thing and make a dash there and so on and so forth.

27. Men see the news on TV especially after coming home, because the problems they hear about and see make their problems seem that much smaller.

28. John’s soul sings when he teaches. Need to find one’s path and go along it. The fact that one feels fear is because it is one’s path. If it was not one’s path then one would not be so worried about whether one made an impact or not.

29. The truth is I deserve to be the way I am. I need not be bothered to be perfect in order to be loved. Once one lives in an atmosphere of perfect trust the more authentic one becomes, and the more authentic one becomes the more irresistible one becomes. The closer we are to who we truly are the more people will love us. There will always be people who do not love us.

30. Forgiveness is the key. If someone hurts then one needn’t hurt back. As Gandhi said, An eye for an eye will make the whole world blind.

31. Women give more. Men want to get more.

32. Women want flowers to be purchased by men. And they should be cut- flowers. So that the flowers die and therefore the men have to go out and purchase them again and again. They do not want the romance to go out of the relationship. Men on the other hand feel that if they have done it once there is no necessity to do it again and again. But women want things and messages to be repeated again and again.

33. Women sometimes give hints viz. On Sunday they will mention that they are getting their hair cut on Thursday. This is to be taken as a warning signal. The hair cut must be noticed. If a woman has to ask how she looks after she has had a hair cut then there is no value placed on the man’s comment. It has to be noticed without being asked. Women put in much more effort in looking good. Men put in more effort in their work.

34. Man wants to be appreciated. Woman wants to be listened to and noticed. Men stress more on what they do while women stress more on their being.

35. Men think that by being flexible they are Mr. Agreeable and that is appreciated by women. Really speaking women want men to take charge and suggest something which they agree on. Mr. Agreeable is boring. The ideal metaphor is to have a man with a plan and a woman with a smile.

36. Sometimes the woman feels that she does everything according to what the man wants. At this point it is necessary for the woman to say “I’ll do it this time your way but next time we’ll do what I want.”

37. Women are always keeping score in a relationship viz. When a woman does anything for a man she always gives herself a point. Men keep score in business. Men need to keep score in a relationship too. They need to do something for the woman so that they too score points from the woman’s point of view.

38. At work the man’s perspective is not to unnecessarily interfere. A man feels that if he doesn’t ask then he is giving total freedom to the woman. But a woman who is a subordinate wants to be asked about her work because silence is taken to mean ‘non-involvement’.

39. Women like the small stuff. Chit-Chat. Occasionally ask some personal questions. The magic words are ‘What else?’

40. To free a man a woman needs to say ‘You don’t need to say or do anything and you don’t need to feel bad.’

41. Listening creates healing.

42. Women by nature give. But when they find that they are not getting anything in return they need to give to themselves. Men have no problem in giving to themselves. Men don’t give enough to others.

43. Men prefer women managers while they learn the job. After learning the job they prefer a male manager.

44. Men sprint faster. Women win the long distance.

45. In men testosterone lowers stress. In women oxytocin lowers stress. Affection, considerateness, being noticed is what produces the oxytocin in women. Therefore men need to learn new skills to produce oxytocin in women. Foreplay is more important for a woman than a man. A woman needs 20-30 minutes of stimulation. A man needs just 2-3 minutes.

46. Women want sensitive men but the danger is that if men become too sensitive then women don’t like it. They want men to be considerate but not to be too sensitive just like them.

47. Don’t try to fix or change your partner.

48. When husband and wife are business partners then there needs to be clear rules. There needs to be a clear demarcated time when no business is talked about.

49. Duty is important but being authentic is more important.

50. Women can be compared metaphorically to the moon. When the moon is full, women crave for sex. When it is half-full, a woman can have it not have it, it does not matter, and when it is a new moon she couldn’t care less.

51. There are different types of sex viz. Healthy, home cooked sex, Ferrari, junk food sex, and Gourmet sex. Once a month one could have Gourmet sex which means bringing in the romance by going out for a dinner and coming home to an atmosphere which slowly climaxes. Whenever he wants sex, and it is a quickie then give it to him. Provided on other occasions there is good, regular homemade sex. In order to arrive at a meaningful understanding one could have 3 candles signifying the 3 types of sex. Either partner finds it very difficult to know the real mood of the other. Depending on which candle is lit and by whom one can behave accordingly. The candle becomes the sign of the mood.

7 Dog Food Ingredients that could be Hurting Your Dog!

What ingredients make for good and bad dog food?

With so many dog foods available on today’s market that are commercially prepared, it is often quite difficult as only a dog owner to tell which ones are better than others and why.

Gourmet Food

First of all, many of the big companies are paying really slick marketers and advertisers millions of dollars per year to advertise their dog food. The amount of money they are spending on marketing has no relationship to the quality of the dog food. This is unfortunate for you as some of the best advertised dog food is inferior.

There is one way for you to guess the quality of dog food however it is not fool proof. You can normally use the price of the food as an indicator as to the quality. Low priced foods are not always, but most often, the lowest quality foods on the market and likewise the more expensive are normally better quality.

When feeding your dog you want to make sure that the adult dog food you are feeding is 22-25% protein and 15-19% fat. The protein should come from a good quality source. Some dogs such as puppies, large breeds, and active breeds have different protein and fat requirements so make sure to discuss this with your vet to ensure proper feeding of your dog.

When making an informed decision, you must know which ingredients are better than others. When you look at the dog food label, the following are the kinds of ingredients that you are looking for:

- Human Grade Ingredients Chicken meal

- Turkey meal

- Fish meal

- Rice

- Potatoes

- Lamb meal

- Potatoes

- Rice

- Sunflower Oil

- Vegetables and others.

For a good dog food, the first four ingredients on the dog food label should not be grains. Instead they should consist of things like meat and proteins.

You also want to make sure it says chicken meal and not chicken as the primary ingredient. If it says chicken only, this means that the manufacturers are counting the entire chicken toward protein value. This includes all of the pieces they have probably scraped of the ground such as beaks, feathers, and feet. With chicken meal, they are only counting the cooked down version of the protein. This will ensure that your dog is getting the appropriate kind of protein and not by products.

Vitamins and fatty acids are also good ingredients in dog foods. Some examples include Vitamin E, Omega 3 and 6, etc. These are very important for a healthy looking skin and coat.

Make sure your dog food is not laden with preservatives. Some of the ingredients that you don’t want to see on your dog food label are the inferior protein’s which consists of but are not limited to variations of the following: Wheat, Corn, Chicken by-products, Soy, Gluten.

These ingredients are hard to digest and can cause health problems later on if used for a long period of time. Sugar is another ingredient that you want to stay away from.

You are always better off making your own dog food and dog treats from recipes such as those you can find at http://www.dogtreatrecipes.com.au, however if you are purchasing dog food you really should only purchase from a company that spends time and money field testing their products.

You can always be sure that companies such as Purina, the Iams Company (which also includes Eukanuba), Royal Canin, Nutro, Diamond, and Hill’s Science Diet are constantly testing their foods to provide the optimum quality ingredients. These companies offer different grades of food, however, from lower quality to premium quality so make sure that you always read the labels.

These are not the only companies by any means who make good quality dog food. The important thing is to read the label, do your research, ask questions of your veterinarians and pet professionals and always be informed. People who work at feed stores are usually a good resource and can help you find good quality pet food. Breeders can also be a good source for finding a quality food for your dog. Dog trainers will also often have a good knowledge of proper nutrition.

You should always follow your veterinarian’s recommendation on food as well. Many times dogs of certain ages or with certain health conditions need to be on a prescription diet. While these diets are often expensive, they do contain the proper nutrients that dogs in these categories need. Many times owners will switch to a commercial food because of cost or palatability concerns and the dog’s health will go in to a decline. Your veterinary staff know what is best for your particular dog.

While it is often confusing, proper dog nutrition is vital to the health and longevity of your dog. By knowing what consists of good quality ingredients and which ingredients to avoid, you can be assured that you will choose the proper food for your dog. As always, if you have questions, ask your veterinary staff for more information.

Chef Knife Set – The Best Cutlery Set For Gourmet Cooking

When you are doing some serious cooking in your kitchen this year, keep in mind that there are several tools that can make your life a lot easier. True, some items are very costly, but some other items as a quality chef knife set can be purchased at bargain prices.

Cooking has become more popular during the recent years, especially with such television shows as the Food Network t.m., and other venues that have really reinforced “gourmet cooking”. I really didn’t start cooking seriously until several years ago, and when I did start. I found that I was missing some essential items that would have made my endeavor a lot easier.

Gourmet Food

First of all, you need a good set of pots and pans. This is really essential, because if you have “undersized” pots and pans, you will not only be filling up all your burners, you will be filling up your sink as well. Keeping your work area clear from clutter and excess pots and pans will allow you to work freely and with maximum space. Remember, space and room are a priority when preparing gourmet meals.

Next, I would invest in a good set of knives. A quality cutlery set I picked up at a local bargain store has bailed me out so many times, that I no longer keep count. It’s crazy to spend so much money on quality meats and poultry; just to see it destroyed when it comes to cutting it and preparing it for serving. A good cutlery set will really make you look like a star.

Lastly, don’t forget some of the extras like a blender, food processor, chopper, and slicer. I was amazed at how efficient this inexpensive food processor was that I had received as a present during the holidays. Throwing in a bunch of vegetables at the same time and watching a perfectly sliced and diced end product come out made it worth its price many times over. My custom cutlery set could have done the job, but it would have taken a lot longer.

So if you are thinking about doing some “serious” cooking this year, then look into purchasing some quality tools such as a quality cutlery set, stainless steel pots and no stick pans. Making your life easier in the kitchen should be your ultimate goal.

Raw Food Chef Ani Phyo Shares Tips on Gourmet Raw, What is in Her Pantry and the Best Blenders

In this article, Ani Phyo shares on gourmet raw, what is in her pantry and the best blenders for home and travel. Ani Phyo is a raw food chef extraordinaire and the author of Ani’s Raw Food Kitchen and Ani’s Raw Food Desserts.

Kevin: I am excited to have Ani Phyo with us today. Today’s going to be really fun. Why not introduce yourself and tell how you got into this whole arena.

Gourmet Food

Ani: Sure, okay. Let’s see. I was really lucky to have been raised on a lot of raw food. My father was a raw fooder. That was like the previous generation of raw. It was when raw food was really about the functionality. So my mom would make vegetable juices with everything that was ripe in the garden that day, without any consideration for visual color or look or flavor. It was more about “put everything in there because it’s good for you and hold your breath and chug it down and get it into your body because it was good for you.”

Then around the mid-90s when I was in San Francisco during the whole dot-com boom, explosion, the multi-media gulch, I came upon Juliano’s restaurant in San Francisco. For the first time I was introduced to a gourmet raw, this new wave of gourmet raw food, without really realizing that is was the same philosophy of what I had been raised with. As I started learning about that and discovering how it affected my body and gave me mental clarity and focus and kept me from getting sick and made my productivity very high, I started delving into it and making more of that food for myself. As I would have somebody over to dinner or go to dinner I’d be making more of it and sharing it. Everyone that would taste the food would be interested in it because everyone that I talked with wants to look and feel their best and get the most out of life and stay healthy and not be sick, all of that great stuff, be their ideal weight.

So I guess by the late 90s I had started doing more catering and events and dinners. When I went down to Los Angeles I was doing weekly dinners for 50-100 people, before there were any raw restaurants down here, really just as a service to the raw community because there were not restaurants. But also for selfish reasons because I needed to feed myself. It was like extreme gourmet. I would be soaking, dehydrating, marinating, sprouting. Really complex recipes. I don’t enjoy doing that when making the food for myself. It’s all about sharing it with others. So by having these events I could have a reason for making this food and then I’d have food to eat up to those events and then leftovers after the events. That would carry me through the week. So that’s really how I got started, for selfish reasons, to have food to feed myself.

Kevin: The book is on consulting. You’d done consulting for different companies, correct? The original book you wrote. The first book you wrote.

Ani: “Return on Design”?

Kevin: Yes.

Ani: It was an interaction, user-experience design book.

Kevin: How did you go into raw food chef? What made you flip the switch? Was it just, “Hey I need to do something different, I don’t like this anymore”?

Ani: I think what it was…I started off as a 3D modeler, animator and then a special effects person. That was the early 90s. As the web started happening in the early 90s and mid-90s, I sort of moved onto the web and doing multimedia online. Towards the later 90s it really became about the large corporations and eCommerce online. That was when I was doing the dinners on the weekends so I could have food to have to take with me into these corporate offices during the weekdays. I think it really just hit this plateau when I got down to LA and I was working with some of the studios and it was really heartbreaking for me to be in these environments because it was during the rolling blackouts and things and there was a shortage of energy, yet these huge corporate towers were really over-cooling the buildings to a point where employees were wearing like fall jackets to the office in the middle of summer when it was 110 degrees. They were wearing blankets over their shoulders at their desks. Our fingers were so cold I couldn’t type. So they were wasting that much energy and then also they weren’t recycling in the break room or whatever. They were drinking water out of Styrofoam cups. People would go and drink like three ounces of water out of a Styrofoam cup and then throw it away.

So being in that kind of environment was really challenging for me. By that time I had been several years of doing the catering and events. They were really taking off. I realized doing dinners 50-100 people every week, I was like, “Wow, this is really a viable business actually.” So I thought, “Why don’t I take a break from the convergence media and focus 100 percent on the food business?” That was really where my heart was. I could see how it was helping people. It was helping the community. It was helping people gain better health and getting more out of their lives and helping them feel better. So I just really believed in that. So that was when I made the switch from making large corporations more and more money when they weren’t really taking care of their communities or the environment, over to the raw food.

Kevin: Great. Well, we have a lot of questions here. They’re all over the map. We have a lot of great people who are listening and a lot of great questions. I’m kind of struggling as to where to start. Why don’t we start with this listener’s question? What are the top five things in your pantry?

Ani: That are in my pantry…

Kevin: Or that are in your arsenal?

Ani: The top five things. Well, right now I go to the Farmer’s Market all the time, when I’m at home. I love it. Peaches are just so amazing. So I always have the vegetables and the fruit in my kitchen, always. I really like the dark leafy greens like the kales and the chards and I like cabbages because they’re so alkalinizing. In my pantry I always have almonds and cashews and different kinds of nuts and seeds. Actually, in my fridge I have hemp and hemp protein. I always have my superfoods, like acai and my chia seeds and my maca and lucuma, all that kind of stuff, my goji berries. Then I have my greens like spirulina, E3live, Vitamineral Green, that kind of stuff, which I really love. So I think those things I would have on hand.

Then when I’m traveling I always have my personal blender with me and I just take the powders in one of the containers to make a smoothie. I’ll have my hemp protein or something. That way when I get somewhere I can just pick up a banana and blend it in. I have my hemp protein and usually I put in some of the powdered E3Live stuff and different superfoods and I make mix. That way in my hotel room every morning I can start with a smoothie.

Kevin: Great. What kind of blender are you using? Are you traveling with?

Ani: A personal blender from TriBest. It’s my favorite. I just love it because it’s so tiny. I used to travel with my food processor or my Vitamix, so now I have more room in my suitcase for my clothes and my books and things like that. It’s really tiny. I take my two-cup size container and it has the little blender top but it also has a storage top and it has a little travel top for it. It’s really versatile. I really love that blender.

Homemade BBQ Sauce Recipes: 3 Quick and Easy Ideas

If you’re looking for something different at your next BBQ or grill-up, then a homemade BBQ sauce recipe is something you’ll want to try.

Good BBQ sauce recipes are worth their weight in gold, but are often closely-guarded chef’s secrets.

Gourmet Food

As the popularity of cooking has increased over the past 10 years -thanks to celebrity chef-type TV shows, many people are seeking inspiration for their menus from the internet, books and TV. Cooking and social events to eat or celebrate food are now hugely popular with many people.

Of all these social events, BBQs are one of the most popular forms of social gathering in many parts of the world.

They allow for a variety of meats and side dishes to be cooked creatively and enjoyed in a relaxed manner, which is why sauce and marinade recipes are in such hot demand.

Adding a spicy or gourmet sauce to the menu is a great way to add something special to your next gathering with friends and family.

Think BBQ sauce is just about something sweet and tomato based? Think again!

There are many recipes that are based on vinegar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and even soy and Hoisin sauces.

No matter whether you’re frying, grilling or even baking meat, or need a tasty dipping sauce, then a homemade recipe is a great choice.

What’s more, many recipes are quick and easy to make in advance. Some can be frozen or kept refrigerated for up to 2 weeks, so you won’t find yourself have to be stuck in the kitchen while family and friends are socializing outside.

BBQ sauce can be used not only as a traditional pour-on sauce for cooked meat, but also as a basting aide when cooking, or as a marinade. The main thing to remember is that the best sauce always starts with a great recipe!

BBQ Sauce Recipes – Fast, Easy, and Tasty!

There are many BBQ sauce recipes that are very simple to follow and understand.

Depending on the specific recipe, you will often start by cooking garlic or onions in a frying pan or heavy saucepan with oil. After this, blends of sauce such as Worcestershire, tomato ketchup, spices, brown sugar, mustard or vinegar are added.

This is often simmered over a low heat, allowed to thicken and then cooled to room temperature.

Homemade BBQ sauce really is that easy!

How to Use as a Marinade

You can also use BBQ sauce as a marinade for meats. This is best done for at least 2 hours, and preferably overnight barbequing.

Allowing the meat to marinate overnight gives the it plenty of time to absorb all of the flavors of the BBQ sauce or marinade.

After giving the meat enough time to absorb the spices, heat up your barbeque, and then place your meat onto the barbeque to start the cooking process.

How to Use as a Baste

If you’re using a homemade recipe as a baste, use a mop (a piece of clean cloth, such as a tea-towel) to dab the sauce onto the meat.

Start by ‘mopping’ the sauce onto the meat before you place it on the barbecue to cook.

Each time you turn the meat, baste the top side with the mop and sauce. Repeat the process until the meat is cooked and tender.

Keep in mind that small cuts like chicken wings may only take a few minutes to cook.

Try More Than One Recipe

Since BBQ sauce is very popular at parties with friends and family, make sure to have plenty available for your guests to eat.

If you’re feeling creative and really want to impress, use several recipes which will allow your guests to choose their favorites or try one of each if they so desire!

Carrots: A 40 Calorie Treat

Have you ever wondered who thought about digging up an orange root vegetable and tasting it? Well someone did and now we have carrots. Carrots are a wonderful source of vitamin A; one medium carrot can provide twice the daily recommended value.

Low in fat, cholesterol free and low in sodium carrots make for a wonderful snack and healthy addition to meals. Salads can easily be garnished with carrot strips created by pealing clean dry carrots with a potato peeler. If you place the carrot strips in the microwave for 30 seconds with a tablespoon of water you can easily curl the strips for added flair. This is a wonderful way to introduce carrots to young children.

Gourmet Food

To make carrots extra enticing to picky eaters try serving carrot flowers. Run a fork length wise down a peeled carrot and then slice ½ inch slices width wise. The fork will create grooves and give the appearance of flower petals.

When buying carrots look for carrots that are bright orange to orange-red in color. The tops should be a rich dark green with no yellowing around the edges. Once home trim the green tops then rinse and drain the carrots and store in a large sealed plastic bag. Carrots will keep in the vegetable drawer of the refrigerator for up to three weeks. When the carrots begin to get limp they are getting old and should be used immediately or replaced with fresh carrots.
